  5.                        How to use C.L.Index
  6.  
  7. C.L.Index is arranged in drawers and files.  If you follow the drawers you
  8. should find what you need.  I suggest that you open the disk icon, then open
  9. the first directory and read its contents.  Then follow the drawers down.
  10. The text files can be read either from this disk or from another Workbench
  11. disk.  If you are unsure of how to use this text reader, some instructions 
  12. follow.  Use the cursor up and down keys to move up and down the file for
  13. now.

  15.                         System Requirements
  16.  
  17. C.L.Index itself runs on any Amiga with Kickstart 2.04 or above.  The 
  18. information contained within refers to AmigaDOS 2.04 but is compatible with
  19. version 3 of the operating system  If you have an O/S 3 machine, please 
  20. remember that your machine has more CLI commands than previous releases.  
  21. The disk itself will run on a single drive machine but if you intend to use
  22. AmigaDOS seriously an extra drive, floppy or hard, is almost essential.

  24.                           Using PPMORE
  25.  
  26. PPmore is the most common PD text reader.  You will find it in use in all
  27. sorts of places - even Magazine coverdisks!  Some, however use the terrible
  28. text reader, MMPP so it is documented later on.  At the top left is a close
  29. gadget.  You click there to quit.  Alternatively, you can click the QUIT
  30. gadget at the bottom right hand corner of the screen.  Click on the gadgets
  31. PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN to scan the text.  LINE UP and LINE DOWN do the same
  32. job but line by line.  Press HELP for a command summary.  HELP, QUIT or the
  33. close gadget return to this text.  I suggest you use HELP now so you can
  34. discover all of its features.

  36. At the top right of the screen you will see a number with a % sign next to
  37. it.  This indicates how far through the document you are.  Most files are
  38. one page long.  if they are more than one page long this number will read
  39. 75% or similar.  Most of the command help texts are just one page long.
  40.  
  41. If you do not like the font used, hold down the right mouse button and
  42. select the menu item "Settings/Change Font...".  Two other fonts are shown.
  43. Topaz 8 is the only suitable font as Topaz 9 is too big.  If you want to use
  44. C.L.Index with this font at all times, select "Settings/Save Settings" from
  45. the menu.  Note that this only changes the text font, not the font used
  46. on the main Workbench screen.

  48.                              CLI Commands
  49.  
  50. A CLI window has been provided at the bottom of the screen for you to try 
  51. out the commands.  If you find it too small, move it upwards by dragging its
  52. title bar then resize it with the sizing gadget.  if you are unsure as to 
  53. what these gadgets are, I suggest you read the first chapter of the "Using 
  54. the Amiga Workbench" manual.  If you close the CLI window, either by typing
  55. EndShell, EndCLI, x (a special alias provided in this window), clicking on
  56. the close gadget or pressing Ctrl-\, either double click on the CLI icon on 
  57. the side of the Workbench screen or select "Execute Command" from the first  
  58. Workbench menu then enter NewCLI or NewShell.  It must be said now, BE
  59. CAREFUL WITH THE CLI COMMANDS!  Always keep the C.L.Index disk write-
  60. protected and always work with a backup copy.  To make a backup copy now, 
  61. follow these instructions.  You can just type everything into the CLI window
  62. that has been conveniently provided :-).

  64. First, find a blank disk.  Not the DPAINT Art Disk, not the Amiga Format May
  65. Coverdisk, ESPECIALLY not your Workbench disk but a BLANK disk.  The reason 
  66. for this is that as media gets old it loses its quality - like an old video
  67. tape.  To make sure you don't get any errors you need brand new disks 
  68. whenever possible.  The Amiga Format Coverdisk has been stuck to the front 
  69. of a magazine, manhandled by everybody in the newsagent's  and left in a disk
  70. box.  Is that going to be as good quality as when you bought it?  And as for
  71. Workbench and Dpaint, I think you might just want to keep them!  Anyway, as
  72. soon as you are finished, type this in the CLI window.  You will have to
  73. click on it first to activate it.  (If you have two drives skip this bit).
  74. MAKE SURE THAT THE C.L.Index DISK IS WRITE PROTECTED AT ALL TIMES!!!!!!!!!!!

  82.         Place SOURCE disk ( FROM disk ) in drive Df0:
  83.         Press <RETURN> to continue

  85. So you MAKE SURE THE C.L.Index DISK IS WRITE-PROTECTED then press the Return
  86. (or Enter) key after putting it in the drive.

  88. And the Amiga grinds away for a bit then asks you to :

  90.         Place DESTINATION disk ( TO disk ) in drive Df0:
  91.         Press <RETURN> to continue
  92.  
  93. Now you put your blank disk in the drive and press Return again.

  95. This will happen a few times then, in the end your Amiga will dutifully
  96. report :

  98.         Diskcopy finished.

  100. * OK?  Now you have a backup of your C.L.Index disk to use INSTEAD of the
  101. * master copy.  Reboot now and read the rest of this file from your backup 
  102. * disk.

  106.     I SAID REBOOT NOW AND READ THE REST WITH YOUR BACKUP DISK!!!!!!

  109. Hello again if you have just rebooted.

  111. If you have two disk drives, make sure the C.L.Index is write-protected then
  112. put a blank disk in the external drive and C.L.Index in the internal drive.
  113. Click on the CLI window at the bottom of the screen and type the following.

  115.         Diskcopy Df0: To Df1:
  116.  
  117. EXACTLY as it is written.  A backup will be made of the C.L.Index disk.  It
  118. is important to make a backup copy of this disk because if you accidentally 
  119. Delete an important file or Format the disk, you won't be able to use it any
  120. more!  And we wouldn't want that, would we?  (DON'T SAY WE WOULD!! ;^}

  124. Always use the backup copy of this disk.  You should only use the original 
  125. to make another backup.  Don't worry about it using up a disk - what would
  126. you rather have... a disk or C.L.Index?  (OK, maybe I should rephrase that!)

  128.                 Print All
  129.  
  130. In every drawer on the disk you will see an icon entitled Print_All.  This
  131. is a program to print out every file in that directory.  It saves you from 
  132. having to load up each file in turn and print it out manually.  You just
  133. double click on the Print_All icon to start it off.  Make sure that your
  134. printer is connected, turned on and a piece of paper is inside it.  Also 
  135. make sure that the correct Printer Preferences are set up first (from the 
  136. About and Usage window).  Once the printer has finished printing, press the
  137. RETURN key (a prompt will come up) to print the next file.  Thanks to John
  138. for suggesting this idea.

  140.                    Help!

  142. If you have problems, CLIndex's help file may help you.  Simply ensure that
  143. the Shell window is selected (click once inside it with the left mouse 
  144. button) then press the key marked HELP (it is above the cursor keys).  A 
  145. small help file will be shown.  It will not help with all problems but it 
  146. aids with some of the simple, common difficulties.  Click on its close 
  147. gadget to exit the help window.
